Fall in Pennsylvania is beautiful. The cooler temperatures and changing leaves brings on the nostalgic feelings of jumping in leaf piles, football games, apple cider and family get togethers. The crisp air and warm sunshine really do transport you back to a younger simpler time of life.
We decided to take a drive one Sunday recently and ended up in Slippery Rock State Park. This is about 30 minutes north of Pittsburgh, PA and easy to get to from interstate 79, 80 or the Pa Turnpike.
We started out our morning in the tiny hamlet of Harmony for breakfast at a small little place that was recommended to us by friends; The WunderBar! Now I describe the town as a hamlet as it’s tiny, really tiny. There is the WunderBar and a thrift shop and not much else, at least in this section of the town. The WunderBar is in an old building that reminds me of an old feed mill, turned general store, turned cafe, etc. There is a lot of rich historic details and vintage decor. If you stop by, be sure to try the crepes, which is what they are known for. They are HUGE and really really good.
From Harmony we traveled to McConnells Mill State Park. While here we visited the old grist mill and covered bridge. What a fantastic stop for photo ops! And let me tell you, this place is hopping in the fall. Dozens of people were walking, hiking, and driving through. If you are able to make this a destination in the fall, you will not be disappointed and should plan to make a day of it.
We finished out our day heading into the town of Slippery Rock and had dinner at North Country Brew Pub. What a great find this one was!! The decor is rustic and welcoming with nooks and crannies of seating areas. There are a lot of wood beams and tables from rough cut timber. They have rooms on the 2nd/ third floor for dining and private parties and plenty of seating at the bar to watch your favorite sports team, which in this area will the the Steelers, Pirates, or Pens! The food here is fantastic and if you get nothing other than a beer and an appetizer, do yourself a favor and get the Pub Pretzels. The “secret” sauce they have is phenomenal. I have no idea what’s in it, aside from fresh horseradish that burns your sinuses if you make the mistake of breathing while eating! But what a sweet burn it is. To make things better they sell this stuff by the jar for only $7! I would have bought a vat of it, but I wanted to be sure to have an excuse to drive back up there for another meal. I had a burger for dinner and this too was very tasty. I’m not sure you can go wrong with any of their food, but I’m willing to keep going back to make sure.
So that was our day trip, in a nutshell. And now you know Where in the World is Slippery Rock, PA!
